Self-directed project to mark the end of my program in illustration. We were completely free to choose what we wanted to make, as long as it could be expanded further after the program. I decided to mix my love of research and birds into tarot cards.

For the Empress Card, the hen was picked. They are beautiful and headstrong animals, but are often forgotten. It felt like the perfect candidate while still being unexpected. The empress card usually has a couple of recurring themes. They couldn't all be depicted, but keeping them in mind helped the card take form.

•The card number, 3, is a symbol of creativity and pleasure.
•The empress is usually crowned with 12 stars for the 12 months.
•This card is linked to the goddess Venus, hence her symbol.
•Wheat is for her ability to nurture and provide for others.
•The pomegranate is for abundance and fertility.
